401k beneficiaries. My husband is the 'Primary' and my 2 children are 'Contingent' - who gets it when I die?

If I die first, would my children get any money as 'Contingent' beneficiaries? Or does my surviving spouse get 100% to spend and/or distribute as he wishes? Thank you.
